For the month of June, Canvas + Clay artist Dale Lowtrip will show his whimsical ceramic art collection in the Floyd Bettiga Gallery at the Morris Graves Museum of Art. Lowtrip, a 78 year old resident of Arcata, has been creating his Humboldt inspired animal sculpture at Canvas + Clay Studio for 12 years. His art background and interest in animals spans back farther, as he took art and wood shop classes in high school, does carpentry and art in his spare time, and worked at the HSU Forestry Lab for nearly 40 years. Lowtrip’s process is painstaking. He uses small carving tools to make hundreds of deliberate etchings into the surface of his sculptures. This creates a texture that simulates fur and feathers, but is actually composed of tiny drawings featuring flowers, birds, people and more.
