Images of pop stars cut out of magazines and bits of tape with his name, PABLO RAHNER, decorate his easel. Upon the easel rests a drawing board, the clips full of future painting references. His stacks are one inch thick; he chips away at them one by one, all the while adding more to the bottoms of the piles. With his favorite tool, a fine black Sharpie, Rahner depicts an array of photos and advertisements he finds in magazines. Oftentimes he will go through a magazine page by page, painting every image in sight. In the morning, with a paintbrush in his mouth, he sets to mixing his paints with great concentration using a fresh palette knife for each color. When everything is in its place then Rahner gets to work. He begins with his subject. He notes any detail he finds most interesting and exaggerates it, distorts it. Next, he fills the in the negative space with short lines, in a dot matrix type style. The final step of his drawing process is to label the back of every piece meticulously with his name, over and over. Even the shirts he wears, works of art on their own, don this repetitive writing on the back. Sometimes intermingled with his name can be seen the names of some of his favorite celebrities, movies and TV shows. Then he paints. With a transparent wash, he fills in the fields with color, bringing the subject to life. From Madonna to still life, Rahner’s subjects vary widely but the style is nothing but recognizable. This is process art, Pablo’s way.
